May 2023 Reads

May was a busy month, but I ended up reading 9 books which ranged from spies, to witches, to Holmes, and to a bunch of children’s books on the Platinum Jubilee and the Coronation. The books and the links to buy them are listed below.

Remember life is way too short to read a book that you don’t like, so read what interests you. Happy reading!

Her Majesty’s Spymaster: Elizabeth I, Sir Francis Walsingham, and the Birth of Modern Espionage by Stephen Budiansky – read for my History bookclub, the story of Walsingham and his spy network.

“Tribute: Three Commemorative Poems” by Simon Armitage – three poems written for important royal events by the British Poet Laureate.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna – a very fun book about a British witch Mika Moon who goes to teach a bunch of orphans. Hopefully, this will be the start of a new series.

The Game is a Footnote: A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery: Book 8 by Vicki Delany – death, a re-enactment museum, and ghosts. Another fun Gemma and Jayne mystery.

A Sinister Revenge: A Veronica Speedwell Mystery by Deanna Raybourn – Veronica and Stoker are off to the countryside to help Stoker’s brother Tiberius lure a killer from the past.

“Let’s Go! on a Carriage: Platinum Jubilee 2022 edition” by Rosalyn Albert and Natalia Moore – a cute children’s book with colorful illustrations for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee 2022.

“Winnie the Pooh Meets the Queen: Queen Elizabeths Platinum Jubilee 2022 edition” by Jane Riordan – an adorable story of Winnie the Pooh and friends going to London to meet the Queen and reissued as a Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee 2022 book.

There Once is a Queen: Commemorating Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee 2022 by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Michael Foreman – the story of Queen Elizabeth’s life beautifully illustrated in watercolors for children and published for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee 2022.

The Boy Who Would Be King: Commemorating the Coronation of King Charles III by Michael Morpurgo and illustrated by Michael Foreman – the story of King Charles’s life beautifully illustrated in watercolors for children and published for the Coronation of King Charles III.
