July 2021 Reads

Not a lot of reading was done in July 2021 due to being busy and having emergency surgery (not fun – don’t do it), but I did finish 4 books. Life is way too short to read a book that you don’t like, so read what interests you!

The Boy Who Would Be King: A Fable About Marcus Aurelius by Ryan Holiday – Ryan Holiday’s kid’s book on Marcus Aurelius and a bit on stoicism. It was a fun book and left me wanting to read a real biography of the famous Roman Emperor.

Interrogations at Noon: Poems by Dana Gioia – I heard about Gioia in a podcast and decided to give his poems a try.

The Three Monarchs: A Sherlock Holmes Short Story by Anthony Horowitz – A fun short story set in the Holmes world.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir – I loved Weir’s The Martian and even gave it away as gifts, but I did not care for his second book Artemis. I was looking forward to this new book because it had an interesting premise – An astronaut wakes up with amnesia and slowly remembers what happened and now he has to figure out a way to save Earth. Ryland Grace is no Mark Watney, but who is. Big book takeaway – do the science, do the math, and you might survive. The ending made me sniffle, so I guess I was more invested than I thought.
