Great Aunt Alice

My Great Aunt Alice recently died. She was my grandfather’s sister and while I had not seen her for years, its always sad when a family member dies. Here is her obituary from the Cuddie Funeral Home (http://www.cuddiefh.com/view.php?oid=581).

“ALICE DMYTRO, age 94, of Waupaca (formerly of Thorp) passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at her daughter’s home in Waupaca. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2013, at 10:30am, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp. Rev. Al Jakubowski will officiate and burial will follow in St. Hedwig’s Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: TJ Stroinski, Tim Stroinski, David Badzinski, Robert Badzinski, Jason Knight, Jamie Knight, and Joel Knight. Music will be provided by the Polish Choir, accompanied by soloist Stacy Stephens. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 9:30am until time of service at the church.

Alice Gulczinski was born on February 3, 1919 in Minot, ND, the daughter of Stanley and Julia (Mozinski) Gulczinski. As a young child, Alice’s family moved to Detroit, MI and later to Thorp, WI where she received her education. She was united in marriage to John Badzinski on July 4, 1936 at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp. Alice worked several jobs over the years, in addition to being a full-time farm wife and mother of five children. John passed away on January 8, 1980. She later married Leo Dmytro on August 15, 1981. They lived in the City of Thorp and enjoyed helping out others whenever possible. Leo passed away on April 27, 2009 and Alice continued to live in her house on School Street until moving to daughter’s home in Waupaca in 2010.
In her spare time, Alice enjoyed baking, sewing, painting and drawing, and square dancing. She was also an active volunteer at church, nursing homes and hospitals, and area schools. Alice always had a big “hug” for everyone and her enthusiastic energy was contagious. She was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church and its’ Parish Council of Catholic Women, was an active member of the Thorp American Legion Auxillary, and a former 4-H Club Leader.

Alice is survived by 5 children: Dorothy (Jim) Stephens of Waupaca, John (Teena) Badzinski of Coon Rapids, MN, Jean (Gene) Mercer of Mosinee, Karen (Rick) Schlabowske of Waupaca, and Gary (Pam) Badzinski of Apopka, FL; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandhildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John in 1980, her husband Leo in 2009, 3 sisters: Frances, Verna, and Ann; and 4 brothers: Frank Joe, Steve, and Florian.”
