Today was the first time in five years, yes five years, that I went flying! I took a “brief” pause in getting my pilots license to have foot surgery in 2017. Well as we know, this 3rd foot surgery did not help and actually made things worse, both with the foot and the back. Then the pandemic hit, I needed to finish the PhD, then had to have emergency hernia surgery, and a 4th foot surgery this past April 2022, which now leads me to November 2022 and the foot and back are doing really well. So flying is back! It went wonderfully and it was so much fun. The temperature was in the upper 30s, it was a beautiful blue sky kind of day, and my turns were very good. Landing, well, I needed help as the airport was very busy with lots going on over at the Tower, and the wind had picked up. But overall a really good first flight back. Was I nervous? Yes, but that’s ok and no its not like riding a bike. I remember some things and forgot some things. It happens and that’s why you get a wonderful instructor like mine. Thanks Cheryl! So I ended up flying my flying club’s Cessna 172 Skyhawk and its a nice plane, but I always feel kind of squished inside. Next I will try the Sundowner. I love flying the Sundowner, but its a lot bigger and heaver than the Cessna 172 and so I am not sure which one I will end up with. We will see!
