Field Trip to the University Bindery

Today was a field trip day! Well kind of. I arranged for my department to take a tour of the University Bindery Services. Random trip? No, not really. Since the ‘powers that be’ closed our Tech Service Dept, I have been assigned bindery duties as part of my Circulation and Supervisor duties and a while back I was in a meeting and someone mentioned a trip to the bindery and I said ‘I want to go’ and so we finally managed to find a date and time.

The Bindery people are really nice and gave us a great tour. It was interesting to see that there is a lot of human contact with the books, more so than computer contact. I was not expecting that. While on tour I even got to see some of the books that I had sent away to be bound! We also got to touch the cool glue which comes in a gel brick like thing, think jello, and got a piece to take home (fyi…the glue smells like wintergreen). They have some new compact shelving and in another room we got to see the large pipe organ from Northrop which is waiting to be sent away for restoration.
