A PhD kind of day!

I received a lovely email today telling me that my admission to the PhD program in International Development at The University of Southern Mississippi has been accepted!!!

I am soo excited! They have a May deadline for Fall 2010 admission, which is really late in the academic season, and I knew they had my application, so it was just a matter of waiting to hear from them.

They have an fantastic program for executive students (aka working adults), so I will not have to quite my job or move. I will be doing my doctorate on aviation, women and India. I know, a fabulous topic!

So that makes me 2-1 in PhD applications! Yes, I got into 2 schools and was rejected by one (a plague upon their houses). The program in International Development at USM was my top pick, so I am extremely happy to be going there!

Applying for PhD programs is really one of the most ghastly things out there (I would rate it up there with blind dating! Yes, I kid you not, it is that traumatic). Well think about it…you send off this huge application filled with all sorts of information on yourself, your interests, and what you want to do in life. Then you have to go around asking people for letters of recommendation (and hope they write nice things about you), you have to spend money on the applications and transcripts for each school (and if you have 12 degrees like me that’s a bit of money) and then you have to wait and hope they like you and call you. And you wait and you wait. See, totally like dating.

But I got in! So happy days! And yes, I am 99.9% sure this will be my last degree.
